That’s the way it was. But that’s history.
Hemp is one of the oldest cultivated crops and decorative plants. Over decades many cultures used this plant for industrial and medical purposes. It was especially appreciated for its robust fibres and was used as a base material for ropes, cloths and several other textiles. However, this changed in the thirties: cheap cotton and synthetics gradually squeezed hemp out of the market. Around the same time cannabis was forbidden in the US. Shortly after, a ban was also imposed in Western Europe.
Before cannabis was banned in Switzerland in 1951 it was used frequently and illustrations of the plant can still be found on various municipal coat of arms (e.g. Wangen-Brüttisellen). Later in the sixties hemp became popular again with the hippie movement. Now, times are changing again: Hemp is being valued as a natural resource once more and legalised in some parts of the world. The legalisation of hemp buds with high CBD levels, but low THC levels, follows the legalisation of industrial hemp. Since 2016 tobacco substitute products with low THC levels and high CBD levels can be sold legally in Switzerland.
We are ready for the future.
In our opinion society is at last changing its opinion towards hemp. It has had a bad reputation for far too long, because it was only perceived as a drug, not as a crop plant. In our eyes this perception was unjust. The benefits of hemp clearly outweigh this negativity: Hemp is a plant that grows naturally and easily in Switzerland. Furthermore, hemp is ecologically sustainable and needs only a minimum of resources for a maximum yield. The aim of ZUYA Culture is to make the use of this versatile crop plant acceptable in every day life and to accelerate this change of thinking. The future for hemp as a natural resource in construction and the textile industry and as a supply of protein is promising.
You can find our fields in the rolling hills of Schaffhausen and high above the Rhone Valley amid the beautiful Alps in Valais. There, we cultivate our plants that have been grown for decades without the use of harmful herbicides or pesticides on around 30’000 square meters. From the seed to the final product our production line is watched over by a well thought out quality management system. Grown organically in the Swiss countryside ZUYA Hemp stands for the highest quality and the best taste.
We are a group of around 10 people from different backgrounds and founded ZUYA Culture with the aim to reintroduce hemp into today’s society. Our journeys through life have been varied, but also show some parallels. We are young, old, idealistic and realistic at the same time. We can sometime become lost in our dreams, but we always stay well structured. In short: We are a perfect team because we all bring something to the table. Over the next couple of weeks we will be introducing ourselves on our blog. First up are our two hemp growers Roger and Andi.
